CLINICAL CHEMISTRY, Vol. 28, No. 5, 1982 1243 to have concentrations for all the above that were within the normal range. FPG, TG, TC, and UA were measured with the SMA-12 Technicon multi-channel analyzer; HDL-C was measured by the method outlined in the Lipid Research Clinics Manual of Laboratory Operations (6). The intercorrelations are shown in Table 1. The fact that significant correlation coefficients exist between the above metabolic variables does not prove that they are causally related. However, the measurement of any one of them may be a useful indicator of the presence of another “latent” abnormality. For example, of 18 individuals with a HDL-C of <0.4 g/L, 12 (66%) had a FPG >1 g/L. Only four of 33 subjects with a HDL-C of >0.6 g/L had a FPG of >1 g/L. Conversely, 36 of 45 men with a FPG of >1 g/L had an HDL-C of <0.5 gIL, and 37 of 46 men with a FPG of <1.OgIL had an HDL-C of >0.5 gIL.

Free or total metanephrines for diagnosis of pheochromocytoma: what is the difference?
Pheochromocytomas, although a rare cause of hypertension, are dangerous tumors that require consideration in large numbers of patients. The resulting low prevalence of these tumors among the tested population and the inadequate sensitivity and specificity of commonly used biochemical tests make diagnosis of pheochromocytoma difficult and time-consuming. As outlined in two articles in this issue...
متن کاملBiochemical diagnosis of pheochromocytoma: which test is best?
CONTEXT Diagnosis of pheochromocytoma depends on biochemical evidence of catecholamine production by the tumor. However, the best test to establish the diagnosis has not been determined. OBJECTIVE To determine the biochemical test or combination of tests that provides the best method for diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Multicenter cohort study of patients te...
متن کاملPlasma metanephrines in the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma.
OBJECTIVE To examine whether tests for plasma metanephrines, the o-methylated metabolites of catecholamines, offer advantages for diagnosis of a pheochromocytoma over standard tests for plasma catecholamines or urinary metanephrines. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING 3 clinical specialist centers. PATIENTS 52 patients with a pheochromocytoma; 67 normotensive persons and 51 patients wi...
متن کاملPheochromocytoma catecholamine phenotypes and prediction of tumor size and location by use of plasma free metanephrines.
BACKGROUND Measurements of plasma free metanephrines (normetanephrine and metanephrine) provide a useful test for diagnosis of pheochromocytoma and may provide other information about the nature of these tumors. METHODS We examined relationships of tumor size, location, and catecholamine content with plasma and urinary metanephrines or catecholamines in 275 patients with pheochromocytoma. We ...
متن کاملDiagnosis of pheochromocytoma. Reflections on a controversy.
The optimal evaluation of patients suspected of having a pheochromocytoma remains controversial. The availability of large numbers of hormone assays and the need to exclude with certainty a potentially lethal disorder with an unpredictable course have led to various approaches to biochemical testing. The quantification of the urinary excretion rate of catecholamine and catecholamine metabolites...
